Feeding Therapy – Wake Forest, NC
Feeding Therapy Explained:
Feeding is the process involving any aspect of eating or drinking, including gathering and preparing food and liquid for intake, sucking or chewing, and swallowing (Arvedson & Brodsky, 2002). Feeding provides children and caregivers with opportunities for communication and social experiences that form the basis for future interactions (Lefton-Greif, 2008).
Swallowing is a complex process during which saliva, liquids, and foods are transported from the mouth into the stomach while keeping the airway protected (ASHA, 2024).

How Feeding Therapy Benefits:
Feeding and swallowing difficulties are often multi-factorial and individual to each child. Mrs. Leach has specialty training and experience with feeding to treat a wide range of feeding and swallowing disorders for children from infancy to teens including:

• Oral motor skills development (such as breastfeeding/bottle feeding, chewing, managing food in mouth, straw drinking, cup drinking)
• Oral sensory skills development (such as eating a variety of textures, colors, shapes, smells and temperatures of food)
• Swallowing difficulties (also called dysphagia)
• Self- Restricted food intake
• Improving the Family Mealtime Experience

Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) involves using a mix of auditory, visual, and tactile stimulation to enhance speech clarity. Additionally, oral placement therapy complements traditional speech treatments and is particularly beneficial for clients with placement and movement challenges.
